Two days from now, NHL goalies will start the shortest audition in modern league history. The 2026-27 preseason is an eight-day, 65-game slate played across 36 NHL and neutral-site venues, beginning Saturday, Sept. 19 and running through Saturday, Sept. 26. Compare that to the sprawling two-week, 100-plus-game exhibition calendars of a few years ago and you start to see the problem facing anyone whose job title is “unsettled starter.”
The compression isn’t arbitrary. It’s the first season under the reduced preseason format that came out of the NHL/NHLPA collective bargaining agreement, clearing room for an 84-game regular season built on two extra divisional games per team. That deal was struck back in the summer of 2025; the schedule math is only now landing on the ice. And with the regular season opening Sept. 29, coaches have roughly a week of live hockey to sort out their crease.
Here’s why that hits goalies harder than skaters. A fourth-line winger can be evaluated on shifts — forechecking habits, puck retrievals, penalty-kill reads. A goalie is evaluated on results, and results in a 65-game exhibition sample are noise. Two soft goals against a lineup full of AHL forwards in a Tuesday night split-squad game can swallow a tandem candidate’s entire case. Under the old format, that goalie got three more starts to bury the tape. Now he might get one.
Expect coaches to lean harder on practice reps, camp scrimmages, and last season’s body of work than on exhibition save percentage. Expect fewer surprises, too — incumbents win ties when there’s no time to break them. The crease competitions worth tracking run through Buffalo, Montreal, San Jose, Tampa Bay, Long Island, New Jersey and Edmonton, and in most of those rooms the presumed starter simply needs to not fall over.
For fans who want to evaluate these battles on something other than goals-against, the position fundamentals in Hockey Goaltending by Brian Daccord are still the cleanest primer on what actually separates NHL netminders.
Eight days. Maybe two or three meaningful starts apiece. Careers have turned on less.
